Vintage Jacket Reborn
From its outback beginnings, and taking inspiration from the rich R.M.Williams archives, this quintessential drover’s jacket is now thoughtfully updated to be appreciated by everyday urban explorers, global travellers and those hungry for adventure.
And who better to epitomise adventure than R.M.Williams himself. Highly influenced by fashion in America during the 1950s and 1960s, he revolutionised the Australian fashion scene during that time by referencing and recreating iconic American garments in a local context. He was the first to introduce denim jeans into Australia in the 1950s. He was also the first to introduce the denim jacket into Australia in the 1960s, but rather than these being fashion pieces they are today, RM turned them into functional, hardwearing, durable workwear for stockmen.
Denims back then were heavy, robust, and they wore beautifully over time. The Rider jacket was one such piece. It was a cropped, neatly fitted garment, worn with jeans that sat a little higher back then. Today, the jacket is still a slim fit, but refined to give a more contemporary silhouette, ideal for wearing with a slim fit jean. (Yes, double denim is definitely more than OK!)
In fact, this season is the first time this heritage R.M.Williams piece has been created in fabrics and finishes other than just the quintessential blue denim: with the new season colourways of intense black, indigo blue and aged brown giving this heritage garment new life.
This reinvented piece is easy care, easy wear. It will elevate a simple jeans and boots pairing to something special, and it will make the new season tapered pant combination look laid-back cool. A key part of the rich history of R.M.Williams, and a key piece in a modern wardrobe.
