We sat down with our design team to discuss natural wool’s enduring appeal, and why this versatile material is here to stay.
The 2022 launch of our Crafting a better future strategy saw a reinforced commitment to the procurement and use of preferred fibres across our product offering. In many cases, this signalled a shift to regenerated, recycled or modern, engineered fabrics, but in other instances, it was a directive to get back to basics. One such example was natural wool, a material considered an ‘old faithful’ in the R.M.Williams apparel range.
This hearty fibre is no stranger to our business, though year-on-year it continues to impress our design team and customers alike with its ever-versatile, ever-functional properties. “In addition to the obvious benefits of comfort and warmth, natural wool is also sweat-wicking, thermo-regulating and odour resistant, which reduces the amount of washing and aftercare required. On the surface it may seem like a material that requires a lot of maintenance, but in reality, it’s inherently sustainable and extremely self-sufficient.”
A new season line-up of wool staples includes the classic Kapunda and Eden sweaters, essential outerwear layers and a range of purposeful accessories, including the R.M.Williams Logo Scarf. In growing our range of wool layers for both men and women, the design team are realising an aim to offering quality and long-lasting style in every area of the R.M.Williams wardrobe.
A more unexpected wool item from our latest seasonal offering is the classic Collins Shirt, crafted for the first time from 100% Merino wool. This reimaging of our bestselling shirt shape is not only a treat for long-time collectors looking to diversify; thanks to its naturally warming yet breathable fibres, it offers an unparalleled wear experience.
Future collections will continue to showcase the open-ended design scope that wool has to offer, with inclusions across our apparel, accessory and even footwear offerings. It’s a fibre steeped in heritage and history, but with its sights set firmly on the future.
