Rooted in heritage athletic wear, the Rugby shirt first rose to popularity as the uniform for weekend matches and professional teams, but it wasn’t long before audiences realised it had plenty of scope for use off the pitch, too. It was soon spotted on the backs of outback stockmen mustering cattle in the sun and layered under blazers for relaxed formal attire. With a stretch cotton jersey construction and a functional cotton twill collar, the shirt provided breathable comfort, flexibility and endless styling potential.
When R.M.Williams invited this silhouette into its stable in the mid 90s, it presented an opportunity to diversify the Rugby’s wearability even further.
“The R.M.Williams Rugby is our rough-and-ready take on a collegiate classic; a style that makes sense in so many different outfitting scenarios,” comments Scott Faulder, Head of Product Development. “In order to maintain its versatility, we placed particular focus on quality cotton fabrics for endurance and breathability, whilst staying true to the try-and-tested functionality of its original shape.”
Today, the Rugby remains a bestselling staple season after season, with customers donning it for weekend adventures, smart/casual business wear and yes, even the odd friendly game or two. And whilst the Rugby shirt’s popularity is rising with a younger audience, it still has a stronghold across generations, too – one which is only becoming more apparent with each seasonal drop of colourways and patterns.
“Over the years the Rugby has become something of a collector’s item, with customers adding new shades and stripes to their wardrobes each year. This style never dates, so it’s easy to see why it has such a long-lasting appeal.”
