‘I love the fact that one day my son will be wearing my RMs’
“I love RMs because of their versatility. Whether I’m inside the factory, in the workshop working on the tools, then in a couple of meetings and then I’ve got to go out afterwards, I like to throw something on that’s going to be really versatile and carry me through all different times of the day. And these boots are a trusted option for me.
But they’ve also got a sense of durability about them where they’re going to last a lifetime, if not more.
I actually bought myself my RMs, so I was pretty stoked to get my first pair a couple of years ago; it was definitely a purchase that I was excited about. And now I’ve got two. I’ve got the Marc Newson Yard boot as well, which are extremely comfy, so I’ve got two great pairs of boots.
I tend to be a creature of habit when it comes to what I wear, I have a more understated nature and I find my RM boots are perfect in that sense. The fact you can dress them up and you can dress them down, they become part of your feet and you can wear them wherever you want. It’s almost like I don’t have to think about it and wearing my RMs has become part of my routine.
I’m drawn to understated design. I always look to functionality and versatility in the boards that I shape and I’m always thinking about sustainability, the lifespan of a product, and I try to build boards so they last and will give you 5-10 years of being able to ride them. And the RMs are definitely designed in that way. The durability and the sense of being able to last generations is something that I really look towards when I’m thinking about design and I really love that about my boots.
My boots are undeniably mine because there’s resin drips from the workshop, and I’ve got a dog, so every time we leave him home alone he goes and grabs my boot – he doesn’t chew it, but he puts his teeth on it to make sure he’s close to me – so my boots are definitely recognisable.
There have been many memorable trips where my RMs have come along as well. One that stands out was a wave that we found down in Mexico with a couple of friends. It was in the desert, about 16 hours’ drive, and you’re about 4-5 hours away from anywhere that you can get water or food, and the RMs were definitely a trusty boot to hike through the desert to find some amazing waves.
I’m envious that my boots can go in and get some after-care service.I reckon the Boot Repair & Care Service is great and we need to design more products that will incorporate this kind of thought process in how they are actually built and constructed and be able to be deconstructed and put back together again. It’s probably something I should take away and think about when it comes to surfboard design.
In doing so, the service gives the boots a longer lifespan and they can then even be potentially passed down through a generation – maybe one day my son will be wearing these boots...”

CLEANING, CONDITIONING & POLISHING FINISHED LEATHERS
CLEANING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Leather Cleaner directly and evenly onto the leather. Rub cleaner evenly over surface with a damp cloth until clean. Remove any excess cleaner with a dry clean cloth.
CONDITIONING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Leather Conditioner evenly to finished leathers with a clean cloth or hands. Allow the conditioner to penetrate before buffing off excess to a soft sheen. R.M.Williams Leather Condition should be applied regularly to finished leather footwear (every six weeks in humid conditions or as the leather becomes dry) to maintain and preserve the leather. Be careful not to over condition. For finished uppers this has the added benefit of reducing harmful polish build-up.
POLISHING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Stockman’s Boot Polish to finished leathers with a clean cloth and rub in well. Buff briskly with a buffing cloth to obtain a high shine. For boots which are badly scuffed, optimum results will be achieved if the polish is left on the uppers overnight. This will ensure the pigment is absorbed into the leather. Buff briskly with a shoe shine brush and finish with a buffing cloth to obtain a high shine.
