‘My RMs have many a story to tell’
“When I was studying wine making at the University of Adelaide, I had R.M.Williams envy, because everyone that I thought was stylish and elegant was wearing RMs and they all loved them... but I didn’t have a pair. When I finished uni, I purchased my first pair and they’re amazing, I love them!
I remember walking into the workshop in Percy Street and just smelling the leather and going, ‘Wow!’ And then I was like a kid in a candy store going, ‘What do I do? What do I do?’ The assistant was fantastic. She looked at my feet to see how I was walking, and said, ‘Here, try these on.’
I put them on and they were perfect. I said, ‘I don't need to try any more. I'm taking these ones. These are my boots.’ She really wantedme to try some others on, but she couldn't believe that I literally was so comfortable in them. I just said, ‘These are it.’ And they have been.
I’ve had them for over 15 years and they’re still holding together so well. They come with me everywhere and they’ve got many a story to tell. I really enjoy these boots. They’re just my boots and nobody else’s, because they’re made for my feet.
They’re great for walking around vineyards in, but then I’ll wear them when I go to restaurants as well. I remember eating at a restaurant in Los Angeles five years ago with a winemaker and he had RM envy as well. He goes, ‘These boots are beautiful.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, you can get them, but you should go into a store and get fitted.’ So he made it out to Australia and went straight to an RMstore to buy a pair, so I’m always spreading the story!
While in LA, I went walking everywhere in them and one day it rained and I remember thinking to myself, ‘I hope I’m not wrecking the leather,’ because it was the first time they’d really been in the pouring rain. But my feet were dry and they were great. Every shop Iwent into people were saying, ‘Great boots, great boots.’ And the boots also came with me to South Africa, as well as when I went to see Bruce Springsteen in concert in New York.
Actually, I met R.M.Williams ambassador Hugh Jackman at the concert and I said to him, ‘Look at your boots!’ I remember admiringhis boots at the time and I had to tell him. He didn't know me. Poor man.
I've had my boots resoled and reheeled three times and I remember the first time I went into the store going, ‘I want a bootmaker that's really good to resole these.’ And he goes, ‘Well, we do it. We send them away for a week and we take the whole sole off.’ And I went, ‘Wow, will they be as comfortable?’ He goes, ‘Yes, they will be.’ And they were, they were amazing. I was incredibly impressed with the service, so to keep them well and safe means I’m happy to have them repaired. The sustainability of these are amazing and I’m not filling the Earth with wasted boots and the like.
I know I've got marks on my boots, but that makes them beautiful and mine. They've got that glow, that depth to them and they definitely get better with age. And the inside of this shoe is my footprint, and nobody else can have them. And that's selfish of me, but I'll be selfish. They're mine.”

CLEANING, CONDITIONING & POLISHING FINISHED LEATHERS
CLEANING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Leather Cleaner directly and evenly onto the leather. Rub cleaner evenly over surface with a damp cloth until clean. Remove any excess cleaner with a dry clean cloth.
CONDITIONING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Leather Conditioner evenly to finished leathers with a clean cloth or hands. Allow the conditioner to penetrate before buffing off excess to a soft sheen. R.M.Williams Leather Condition should be applied regularly to finished leather footwear (every six weeks in humid conditions or as the leather becomes dry) to maintain and preserve the leather. Be careful not to over condition. For finished uppers this has the added benefit of reducing harmful polish build-up.
POLISHING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Stockman’s Boot Polish to finished leathers with a clean cloth and rub in well. Buff briskly with a buffing cloth to obtain a high shine. For boots which are badly scuffed, optimum results will be achieved if the polish is left on the uppers overnight. This will ensure the pigment is absorbed into the leather. Buff briskly with a shoe shine brush and finish with a buffing cloth to obtain a high shine.
