‘My boots just really suit my style’
“Since the age of five, my family have had restaurants and worked in restaurants, and I always remember my dad wearing R.M.Williams boots when I was a kid, they were his favourite boots. And 20 years later he’s still wearing them! I was lucky that my friend gave me this custom pair of boots about seven years ago and I’ve hardly taken them off since.
I’ve never been a sneaker guy. I’ve always tried to look older than I am, even if I don’t act like it, but I’ve had this obsession with being more gentlemanly and the boots are definitely part of it. They’re a sturdy pair of boots that are polishable and they always look good.
They’ve done a lot of different stuff. I’ve worked in restaurants with them, I’ve played shows with my band, and I’ve done a lot of walking in them, especially across the world. I’ve taken them everywhere with me. They came with me to Japan when I went on tour with my band Wild Honey, and I walked all over Europe in them as well.
I actually have two pairs of RMs – these and a pair of Yearling boots with a Cuban heel. Those ones I keep for stage wear for when I play nicer shows, so I’ve kept them quite nice, whereas the Turnout boots are my everyday wear that I knock about in. And for a long time, they were just covered in all sorts of things, like fat from the restaurant I work in, and scuffs and marks from everyday use.
I’ve always liked the Cuban heel. It was the closest thing I could find to getting a pair of boots like The Beatles wore, because I was obsessed with The Beatles when I was younger. I still am now, but that was it, you know, drainpipe trousers and the boots with a heel. I think they were called Chelsea boots then, but some of the RMs are the closest thing to them.
What would my boots say about me? Probably, ‘Sit down. He doesn’t sit down enough.’ I walk a lot and, like I said, I don’t own sneakers, so I’m always walking in a pair of boots. And because of all that walking over many years, I’ve needed to get them repaired through the Boot Repair & Care Service.
I had the heel built back up and the sole replaced. I think I’ll need to get the elastic replaced soon as well. When I got them repaired, I got a stern talking to for not using enough polish. Oh yeah, that’s what my boots would also say to me, ‘Feed me. Sit down and feed me.’
When you invest in a pair of RMs, you kind of want to know how to look after them. And that’s the value in getting them fixed, because it’s great having something that you can keep that’s just yours. You wear your boots in so much that if someone else were to wear them, they’d feel so alien to them. There’s nothing else quite like a very worn in pair of boots.
I don't reckon they're going to fail me anytime soon, especially if I can just keep sending them back!”

R.M.Williams boot repair
You can tell a lot about a person by the state of their boots. Some of our customers bought their first pair of RM’s over half a century ago and still wear them till this day. Your RM’s will need the occasional service and that’s where our Boot Repair Room steps in. It takes time to make something special, which is why it’s worth keeping your RM’s in top-notch condition and investing in a little care and attention. Whether it be resoling your boots, fixing your stitches, or replacing the iconic tugs and elastic, our Boot Repair Room is equipped to bring your RM’s back to health and you back on your feet. CLEANING, CONDITIONING & POLISHING FINISHED LEATHERS
CLEANING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Leather Cleaner directly and evenly onto the leather. Rub cleaner evenly over surface with a damp cloth until clean. Remove any excess cleaner with a dry clean cloth.
CONDITIONING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Leather Conditioner evenly to finished leathers with a clean cloth or hands. Allow the conditioner to penetrate before buffing off excess to a soft sheen. R.M.Williams Leather Condition should be applied regularly to finished leather footwear (every six weeks in humid conditions or as the leather becomes dry) to maintain and preserve the leather. Be careful not to over condition. For finished uppers this has the added benefit of reducing harmful polish build-up.
POLISHING FINISHED LEATHERS
Apply R.M.Williams Stockman’s Boot Polish to finished leathers with a clean cloth and rub in well. Buff briskly with a buffing cloth to obtain a high shine. For boots which are badly scuffed, optimum results will be achieved if the polish is left on the uppers overnight. This will ensure the pigment is absorbed into the leather. Buff briskly with a shoe shine brush and finish with a buffing cloth to obtain a high shine.
